A strong voice and strong support for Victorian Landcare
Landcare Victoria Inc. (LVI) Members Council representative, Sandy MacKenzie from Avenel, was invited to attend the summit, and was well armed with evidence he had gathered when he led a locally sourced fodder convoy to inland NSW. This, combined with briefing documents prepared by the current interim chair of the National Landcare Network's Members Council (our own Deputy Chair, Kaye Rodden), put the case for the landcare community as a key deliverer of resilient landcapes and communities.
In announcing his Drought Fund today, the Prime Minister recognises the significant role that resilient communities have in mitigating the social, economic and environmental impacts of droughts, so we are optimistic that our voice is being heard now in political spheres.
Whilst the dry conditions in NSW and Queensland have been making the headlines of recent times, there are also significantly many areas in Victoria and South Australia that are suffering severely dry, and in some cases drought, conditions. The increasing impact of climate change on our landscape is forecast to exacerbate the severity and frequency of these conditions in the future.
We all need to be prepared, and the role that our landcare community has and will play in helping landholders develop land management practices which will make their landscapes more resilient and resistant to shocks such as drought is pivotal.
Landcare Victoria Inc.(LVI) looks forward to working with governments of all persuasion to make this happen.
